Cruising evolution: Ocean lines move inland, the Rhine and Danube rivers

Ocean lines move inland: Ocean luxury brands are aggressively pushing into the river cruising space. Following major announcements by Explora Journeys has officially detailed plans to expand into European river itineraries, indicating a sweeping industry trend toward smaller, boutique ships.

Celebrity Cruises is the major player missing from that headline. In late September 2026, Explora Journeys (the luxury arm of the MSC Group) signed a Letter of Intent with Dutch shipbuilder Den Breejen Shipyard to construct its first fleet of premium river vessels. This move signals a massive, coordinated land grab by ocean giants into Europe's internal waterways.

The strategy is simple: ocean cruise lines are betting heavily on a premium "crossover effect". By translating their highly successful ocean service formulas to a smaller, boutique footprint, they aim to build an all-inclusive travel ecosystem that keeps affluent passengers loyal across all formats of cruising. Here is how the landscape shapes up for a new wave of river cruising:

The Ocean Giants Collide on Inland Rivers

The European river cruising market—traditionally dominated by standard river brands like Viking, AmaWaterways, and Uniworld—is being fundamentally altered by two multi-billion-dollar ocean line expansions:

Celebrity Cruises: The brand has made an enormous commitment to the sector. Construction has already begun on its debut river vessel, Celebrity Compass, which is slated to hit the water in 2027. Showing incredible confidence in the market, Celebrity plans to scale its operations rapidly, aiming for a 20-ship European river fleet by 2031.

Explora Journeys: While exact vessel counts, schedules, and route blueprints are being kept under wraps by the Geneva-based luxury line, they have officially confirmed that bookings will open to the public in 2027. The fleet will look to adapt Explora’s hallmark "Ocean State of Mind" philosophy—blending modern European luxury design, fine culinary suites, and relaxed elegance—into a boutique, river-friendly scale.

The target core: The Rhine and Danube rivers

Both newcomers are setting their sights directly on the heart of European river transit: the Rhine and Danube rivers. These waterways connect iconic cultural capitals like Budapest, Vienna, and Cologne. By operating on these highly trafficked routes, the ocean brands can leverage existing premium infrastructure while offering their loyal past guests an easy, high-end alternative to traditional ocean sailings.
